Penta Infra signs letter of intent for heat reuse project in Leeuwarden
On Wednesday 21 May, Penta Infra signed a letter of intent to supply residual heat from its Leeuwarden data center to a new sustainable heat network at business park De Zwette IV.
Together with the Municipality of Leeuwarden and four pioneering companies (Crystalic, Meesterschilders Friesland, Van der Horst Autogroep and Wetterskip Fryslân), this marks the first step toward the development of a fifth generation low temperature heat network in Friesland. The project is notable not only for its use of residual heat, but also for its ability to deliver cooling during the summer months.
By reusing heat from the data center, the participating companies are expected to save a combined total of 106,000 kilograms of CO₂ emissions each year. This contributes to long-term sustainability goals and helps lower energy costs, while also easing pressure on the regional electricity grid.
“This project is a great example of how local collaboration can turn sustainability ambitions into practical solutions,” said Gerald Sprenkeling, CFO at Penta Infra. “We are proud to contribute our residual heat and to be part of a future-focused energy solution for the Leeuwarden region.”
The initiative supports the Municipality of Leeuwarden’s ambition to reduce CO₂ emissions by 60 percent by 2030. The network is expected to become operational by the end of 2026, with groundwork scheduled for April that year.
At Penta Infra, we believe it is our responsibility to provide energy efficient colocation services while supporting the communities we are part of. We are proud to contribute to this forward-looking project and the broader sustainability goals in the region.
The research that preceded the sustainability efforts of the companies was made possible in part by the Innovation Fund of the Municipality of Leeuwarden, a contribution from the Province of Friesland, and climate funding.
