Penta Infra and Polderwarmte sign letter of intent for heat reuse in Waarderpolder
In order to use the residual heat from the data center sustainably for entrepreneurs in the Waarderpolder, European core and edge colocation provider Penta Infra and heating company Polderwarmte have signed a letter of intent in which they establish their intention to continue working together.
Within the scope of this collaboration, Penta Infra data center AMS01 will be one of the primary sources of residual heat at the Waarderpolder business park. The data center has been acquired by Penta Infra late 2023 and is currently in preparation as the modern and sustainable data center in the Metropolitan Region Amsterdam. The parties aim to offer 100% of residual heat to the heat grid.
Polderwarmte provides collective solutions for fossil-free space heating and cooling. The most important service in this is the development, construction, operation and management of smart green heat networks. Characteristic of a smart green heat network is that supply and demand are accurately matched and that the supply of sustainable heat and hot water comes from sources with the lowest CO2 emissions. The sustainable heat comes from multiple sources. This can be the residual heat from several data centers, but also, for example, the residual heat released from other production processes.
The City of Haarlem and Industriekring Haarlem jointly initiated a tender process for the best heat solution in 2022 and selected Polderwarmte as a partner by the end of 2023 to develop a sustainable heat network and then manage and operate it for 30 years. Anyone who has a building in the Waarderpolder can participate, but connecting is not mandatory. In about one year Polderwarmte wants to have enough customers for this sustainable heating solution and enough sustainable heat sources that make their waste heat available. Then the heat network will be constructed with the goal of delivering the sustainable heat a year later. The municipality of Haarlem and Industriekring Haarlem are closely involved in this project, which will make an important contribution to achieving Haarlem's ambition to heat the Waarderpolder completely free of natural gas as early as 2040.
